jalapeño cheddar turkey burgers.

jalapeno cheddar turkey burgers - Cody Uncorked

Grilling season is in full swing and these burgers are perfect for outdoor enjoyment. Prepare the toppings and burger patties ahead of time (mise en place, people), then mix up a cocktail or crack open a cold one while waiting on the grill to heat up.

This burger is juicy, cheesy and can be customized for the perfect amount of spice. You might cringe at the sight of mayo on the ingredient list, but TRUST, you won’t taste it and it really help add moisture to the turkey.

I’ve included the toppings we used below, but feel free to go wild with yours. Also, don’t forget to lightly butter/oil the buns before throwing them on the grill for the burgers’ last few minutes. Toasty buns are happy buns.

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • ½ medium onion, finely diced
  • 1-2 jalapeños, finely diced (remove seeds for less heat!)
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
  • ½ cup freshly shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons mayo
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • heavy sprinkling of salt and pepper

optional toppings

  • guacamole
  • sliced tomato
  • bacon
  • fried egg

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix with your hands until everything comes together. Divide mixture into fourths, then smooth each fourth into a palm-sized patty. Grill on medium-high heat for about 5 minutes on each side (use a meat thermometer to monitor temperature).

Serve on toasted buns with your favorite toppings!

PS: here’s a good recipe from The Kitchn for guacamole (I add diced tomatoes to mine) and a tutorial for basic fried eggs.

Happy grilling!

  1. That’s my kind of burger! The egg just makes it.
